# Bitwarden

Standing (still-up). Founded 2016-08-10.
Site: [bitwarden.com](https://bitwarden.com)

Michael Crump's successor story aside: 2016, the open vault. Still the one you can self-host.

## Why it lasted
- Open source plus a hosted option plus a price that does not insult you.
- LastPass refugees needed a home that was not a lecture about enterprise SKUs.

## Near deaths
- 1Password has the taste. KeePass has the purity. Bitwarden sat in the middle and that is a lot of people.

## What would finish it
- OS passkeys making vaults feel like a 2016 problem, plus a breach of the hosted service. Watch both.
