Gabriel Weinberg, 2008. Still the search engine you switch to on purpose.

## Why it lasted
- Privacy as a default is a brand you can actually feel in the settings.
- It is the protest vote that became a daily driver for a slice of people who will not go back.

## Near deaths
- Microsoft Bing under the hood was always the joke. The bangs and the brand kept it from being just a reskin.
- Google's 2020s quality slump helped more than any campaign.

## What would finish it
- Chat search making 'a box that returns ten blue links' feel antique, plus Apple/Firefox default deals going elsewhere.
