# FFmpeg

Standing (still-up). Founded 2000-12-20.

Fabrice Bellard, 2000. Still the compiler of moving pictures.

## Why it lasted
- Every video product is FFmpeg with a UI. Including the ones that will not say so.
- A volunteer project that ate a trillion-dollar format war by supporting all of the formats.

## Near deaths
- Patent and license traps around codecs. The project kept shipping decoders.

## What would finish it
- A legally cleaner stack that is as complete. Nobody has both.
