# Ghost

Standing (still-up). Founded 2013-10-14.
Site: [ghost.org](https://ghost.org)

John O'Nolan, 2013, Kickstarter. Still the grown-up blog with members.

## Why it lasted
- A nonprofit CMS that is also a membership business. Writers who outgrew a newsletter still land here.
- You can self-host. That sentence keeps a class of people loyal.

## Near deaths
- Medium was the gravity. Substack was the gravity. Ghost stayed the owned property.

## What would finish it
- Substack remaining 'good enough plus the network' for everyone who does not want to be a sysadmin.
