- Linus wrote it in anger in a few days and the distributed model made every other VCS look centralised and slow.
- GitHub made Git the social layer of software. You can hate GitHub and still be stuck with Git.
- The CLI is hostile and that did not matter.
Times it almost ended
- BitKeeper's license slap is the origin story. Git exists because a tool got pulled.
- Mercurial was nicer. Git had Linux and then GitHub.
