Git

the moat is real

21 years 135 days and counting

Announced 7 Apr 2005. The plumbing is still a little cursed. The graph won.

Why it lasted

  • Linus wrote it in anger in a few days and the distributed model made every other VCS look centralised and slow.
  • GitHub made Git the social layer of software. You can hate GitHub and still be stuck with Git.
  • The CLI is hostile and that did not matter.

Times it almost ended

  • BitKeeper's license slap is the origin story. Git exists because a tool got pulled.
  • Mercurial was nicer. Git had Linux and then GitHub.

What would finish it

  • A version control model that is not a DAG of snapshots and is so much better that GitHub has to speak it. Unseen.
