## Why it lasted
- It is how a Mac gets Unix software. That sentence has been true for a long time.
- A volunteer formula tree is a public good with a donation jar.

## Near deaths
- MacPorts was there first. Homebrew was nicer. That was enough.
- Apple's own packaging fantasies. brew install still wins.

## What would finish it
- Apple shipping a first-party manager that is not a lecture. They have not.
