# VLC

Standing (still-up). Founded 2001-02-01.

VideoLAN, early 2000s. Still the player you install when the other one lies.

## Why it lasted
- It plays the file. The cone is the brand. No account, no store, no lecture.
- Traffic-cone icon recognition is a cultural moat you cannot buy in an app store.

## Near deaths
- Streaming apps made local files feel old. People still have a file. VLC still opens it.

## What would finish it
- OS video players that actually play the weird file. They still send you to VLC.
